The state government has awarded a contract for filling of the erosion site at Hundred Foot Road behind the New Motorcycle Spare Parts Nkwor Nnewi.
The Transition Committee chairman, Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mr. Chukwudi Orizu announced this during a tour of the area.
Mr. Orizu identified it as the discharge point of water from over three Local Government Areas through the New Motorcycle Spare Parts Nkwor Nnewi to Osakwe road down to Hundred Foot Road where it is finally discharged.
While announcing that work will commence on the site this week, Mr.
Orizu noted that they have agreed to construct a burrow pit for sand excavation.
He however announced their plans to form a committee with market leaders and environmental health officers to apprehend sanitation offenders, who will be liable to a fine and also desilt the drainage.
Also speaking, the chairman, New Motorcycle Spare Parts Union, Nkwor Nnewi, Mr. Obinna Okechukwu, appealed for the enlargement of the drainage channels from the present six feet deep to fourteen feet deep so that it can contain the volume of flood in the area to avoid overflowing into shops and destroying goods.
Mr. Okechukwu thanked Governor Willie Obiano for sending the Commissioners for Works, Environment and Commerce to quantify looses and proffer immediate solutions for urgent redress.
He expressed satisfaction that their visit to the site has started yielding actions following the movement of Caterpillars, other heavy equipment and machines to the site.
