Nigeria imports one-point-one million tonnes of Onion every year despite being the second largest onion producer in Africa after Egypt.
The President, Regional Observatory of the Onion Sector in West and Central Africa, Mr Mustapha Kahdiri, disclosed this at a meeting held in Sokoto.
He noted that Nigeria requires two-point-five million tonnes of onion annually but it only produces one-point-four million tonnes.
Mr Khadiri, however, described closure of Nigerian borders as good for onion farmers in the country.
According to him, the decision was a blessing to the country as it would help it to become self- sufficient in terms of agricultural produce, especially onion as it will force farmers to produce enough for local consumption.
The President who is from Niger Republic, said they would introduce Nigerian Onion Farmers to the best way of preserving the produce to avoid waste.
