Experts say one out of four persons in the world will have stroke in their lifetime.
This assertion was made known during the 2019 World Stroke Day celebration organised by the Stroke Action Nigeria in collaboration with the Onitsha General Hospital.
This year’s World Stroke Day celebration with the theme “Do not be the one with Stroke” attracted people from all walks of life living in Onitsha and it’s environs.
The event featured road walk, as the group marched round the General Hospital’s compound and along Awka road Onitsha creating awareness on how to prevent and treat Stroke.
Speaking to the ABS in an interview, the organiser and a Nurse Consultant on Stroke Care Mrs. Rita Melifeonwu Okolonji said based on the increasing Risk Factor of Stroke, the World Stroke Campaign Working Group has decided to focus the day’s celebration on stroke risk identification, assessment and prevention.
Mrs. Okolonji noted that two hundred thousand people in Nigeria have stroke which according to her is incorrect as majority of people living with Stroke were not adequately captured due to their inability to assess treatment at the hospitals, hence the need to escalate efforts to make people know their risk factor status.
Addressing the gathering, a Nutrition Consultant Mrs. Queen Akwuobi, advised the people to ensure they eat balanced diet, reduce intake of salt and sugar, shun refined and processed foods, drink enough water as well as visit a dietician for Management advise to reduce the risk factors of Stroke.
On her part a stroke survivor Ambassador Chinelo Amobi who disclosed that regular exercise, intake of prescribed medications and balanced diet are prerequisite to stay healthy, challenged those living with Stroke to make a determination that they can get better.
One of the beneficiaries of the free medical check, Mr. Sunday Ezeoma, said he learnt a lot from the expert’s lifestyle and Management advice by the organisers of the event.
The event featured free medical checks, risk Factor assessment and self Management advise by the doctors.
