The Federal Capital Territory Development Authority has announced plans to introduce sign-language interpretation in the curriculum of Nursing Schools to facilitate deaf patient’s access to healthcare services.


The Secretary of Health in the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority Mr. Musa Abdulraheem, disclosed this at a healthcare stakeholders workshop organized by Deaf Women Aloud Initiative and Voice Initiative in Abuja.


The theme of the workshop is Increasing Access to Health Service and Information for Deaf Women Through Sign-Language Glossary.


Represented by Mrs. Bukola Azeez, the organization’s Assistant Director of Policy, Health and Human Services, Mr Abdulraheem said it is important for nurses to understand sign language so that they could attend to deaf patients accordingly.


The Country Director of IPAS, Mrs. Hauwa Shekarau, said that the importance of sign language can not be overemphasized, adding that it will be helpful in engaging with deaf women.
The project is a very important aspect of development work.
