Need to include personal hygiene and sex education in the secondary school curriculum have been stressed.
This was highlighted during a one day leadership training organized by the Nigerian Girl Guide Association, Anambra Youth forum in Awka.
The training which was themed “empowering girls for brighter tomorrow” featured talk on menstrual hygiene management, pursing the sustainable development goals initiative on training of girl child, among other things.
Addressing the participants, the State Commissioner, Nigerian Girl Guide, Dr Hellen Obi said that the association has sustained training that promote health status more especially as it concerns menstrual hygiene management.
She advised the participants to prevent and manage themselves in such a way that they will not be infected as it may cause infertility.
In a lecture on menstrual managements, Lady Dorathy Obionwu who is a retired chief nursing officer, UNTH, Enugu, said that pains or cramps being witnessed during menstrual flow is normal as she exposed the girls to various signs and symptoms to expect, advising them not to be deceived about sex easing menstrual pains as it will not only lead them to unwanted pregnancy but will destroy their future.
In her remarks, the State Assistant Commissioner Girl Guide, Mrs Chidiogo Nwankwo said the program is a welcome initiative as everything was practicalised for the girls to see monthly menstruation as a thing of nature and not sickness, pointing out that some parents do not senstize their wards early enough.
The Assistance Secretary of the Association, Mrs Chinwe Chukwuma who tutored the girls on how to place their sanitary towels to avoid linkage or stains as well thought them how to make re-usable pad to save cost.
In an interview, two participants, Miss Ifechukwu Onwuzulike and Kamsy Okpara commended their leaders for such a program and affirmed that they have learnt a lot during the programme, especially, how to produce a re-usable sanitary pad, calling on other girls to join the association and start benefiting from it.
The girls were exposed to so many practicals, while the state Commissioner presented them with sanitary towels and other hygiene items.
