Anambra State government’s effort in crime fighting once again came to the fore, as both the Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and the state police command received awards for crime bursting at the 16th Africa Security Watch Awards in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.


Ekwi Ajide, ABS Abuja Bureau Chief was at the event and reports that the awards tagged ‘Celebration of Africa’s Best in Security, Safety and Governance’ was organized bySecurity Watch Africa, a body which have in the past twenty years promoted security in Africa through its programmes on television.


Governor Willie Obiano at the award night, received the ‘Security Icon in Governance in West and Central Africa award, while the Anambra State Police Command got the Best Crime Bursting Police Command in Nigeria award.


Anambra state Commissioner of Police, CP John Abang was named ‘The Best Crime Bursting Police Chief in West Africa’ and the governor’s Chief Security Officer, CSP Chinedu Aniagboso, received ‘The Best Executive Protection Security Officer in West and Central Africa’ award.


Also, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Haruna Mohammed bagged ‘The Most Outstanding Police Public Relations Officer in West Africa’ award and the State’s Police Operations Officer, Williams Oduma received ‘The Best Police Operations Officer in Nigeria’ award.
In a keynote speech on ‘Crime Prevention, Control And Fighting In An Emerging Economy: The Anambra Case Study, Governor Obiano represented by his Special Adviser on Creative Security, Air Vice Marshal Ben Chiobi mni (Rtd.) said criminals are often dettered by the knowledge that they will be caught and punished hence his administration took actions that will prevent crime since prevention remains better than cure.


He stated that while previous administrations remained tentative as to what actions to take, his administration took decisive actions to nip crime in the bud.


The governor counted organizing an international security conference, launching and sustaining a special task force- Operation Kpochapu, crackdown on suppliers of weapons to criminals and pulling down of houses used as holding places for kidnappers as some of the drastic actions taken to fight crime in the state.


On his part, the State’s Commissioner of Police, John Abang, said their success story is hinged on the modern and sophisticated gadgets provided by the state government hence credit for their effective crime fighting should go to Governor Obiano.


He pledged not to relent in the fight against criminal activities in the state so that Anambra remains the safest state in Nigeria.


Earlier, the convener of the event, Mr. Patrick Agbambu, said the body had been in the forefront of promoting security in Africa and will continue to do its best to ensure Africa becomes one of the most secured continents in the world.


Some other Nigerians that received awards include Dr. Kemdi Opara who bagged ‘Golden Star Award’ for empowerment and community development in Nigeria, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and a post humous award to the late Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, FCT Command, DCP Usman Umar among others
