A total of two hundred and one thousand, six hundred tins of the fake kiwi shoe polish, worth about forty two million naira, were yesterday destroyed, on the orders of a Federal High Court in Awka.

It would be recalled that Justice I. B. Gafai of the Federal High Court, Awka had on the eighteenth of April 2019, ordered the destruction.

Those who witnessed the destruction exercise were officials and bailiffs of the federal high court in Awka, the public and the press, as ordered by the court.

Speaking to the press, Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mr Tagbo Anaeto disclosed that the defendants in the matter were from Onitsha Market, adding that the measure is inline with the court order, given to that effect.

While stressing that the exercise is ongoing, Mr Anaeto pointed out that other punitive measures ordered by the court against the defendants include seizure of the property, damages of two million naira paid to the court, pointing out that the act amounts to economic sabotage and infringement on the original trademark of the manufacturers.

Also speaking, the owner of the Kiwi franchise in Nigeria, Chief Sam Anyanwutaku, commended the judiciary and others supporting efforts to eliminate fake products pointing out that as a result of their war against fake Kiwi products, about seventy five percent reduction has been noticed, expressing optimism that it will be stopped totally.
