Governor Willie Obiano, will today flag off the introduction of second dose of measles vaccine into routine immunization at the Primary Health Care Centre Isuaniocha, Awka North local government area.
In view of this, mothers and caregivers have been urged to avail themselves of the opportunity and make sure that their children are vaccinated. The Anambra State Commissioner for Health Dr Vincent Okpala, announced this during a press briefing held at the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Awka. Correspondent, Valentine Mbadugha reports that Dr Vincent Okpala who noted that measles cannot be treated, rather it can be prevented using the measles containing vaccine (MCV), reassured that Anambra State will always join the nationwide exercise to ensure improved immunization coverage in the state.
Dr Okpala, who was represented by the Acting Permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr John Ndibe stated that the objective of the state governments commitment to the launching of the second dose of measles vaccine into routine immunization is to ensure that all children between nine to twenty-three months in the state receives the second dose of measles containing vaccine and all children under two years receive the routine immunization according to the schedule.
He noted that health workers will be at designated health facilities starting from today to next week Thursday, offering routine immunization and at the mobile posts in catchment areas to give measles containing vaccine as well as other routine vaccines.
In a remark, the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Chioma Ezenyimulu, noted that the agency will soon kick off camping against yellow fever and other vaccine preventable diseases to reduce the burden of other childhood killer diseases targeting at ensuring a healthy living for all the children within the state.
For the Anambra State Coordinator of the World Health Organization, Dr Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, who spoke on behalf of all the partner agencies, Anambra State has maintained a lead role in the fight against childhood killer diseases noting that the 2020 global measles elimination goal is attainable if the tempo is sustained.
