The Immediate past President of Sierra Leone, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, has visited the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe at the Ime Obi of Onitsha, as well as the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu.


Dr Bai Koroma arrived Anambra State as the guest speaker at the eight Zik’s Lecture Series holding today at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium, Awka.


The former Sierra Leonian leader was received with a twenty-one gun salute at Ime Obi Palace Onitsha.


In his speech, Dr Bai Koroma noted that his country has maintained a cordial relationship with Nigeria, expressing the hope that this will be sustained to boost the pace of development in the West African Sub-region.


He noted that the former Nigerian leader, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, contributed a lot to the development of Africa, noting that his position as the guest speaker during the eighth Zik’s lecture series is a great honour and a perfect opportunity to pay his tribute to the great African Leader.


The Chairman, South East Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Achebe of Onitsha and his Awka counterpart, Obi Nwosu while welcoming the former President of Sierra Leone in their separate palaces, presented Dr Koroma with special gifts depicting the rich cultural heritage of Igbo land and books containing the history of Onitsha, Awka and African culture.


They noted that Nigeria and her sister nation, Sierra Leone should maintain a cordial relationship for improved development.


On his part, the Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Professor Fredrick Odibo, stressed the need for collaboration between African countries.
Among Dr Bai Koroma’s entourage, were the Benefactor of the Zik’s Lecture Series, Senator Ben Ndi Obi, the Registrar of the university, Barrister Philomena Okoye, among other members of the University’s Governing Council.
