In line with the State Government initiative of eradicating poverty in the state through empowering women and girl child, Widows Lifeline, a non-governmental organisation has empowered over forty Widows trained on various skills in Onitsha.

The event was held at Mother Bernadette Anyaogu Memorial Technical and Vocational Institute Onitsha, Onitsha North Council Area.

The women trained on bead making, hat and turban making, slippers beading, confectioneries, liquid soap, shampoo and bleach among others were drawn from various quarters in Onitsha.

Addressing the women, the Director Widows Lifeline Professor Dame Uche Azikiwe said she was driven by the passion of alleviating the plight of women in the society especially the widows based on what they are passing through in the society.

Dame Uche who went down the memory lane when she lost her husband the Late Owelle of Onitsha, Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe said widow’s lifeline came into existence since 2015 and since then has single handedly sponsored women and girls on how to catch fish instead of giving them fish, stressing on the importance of girl child education.

In their separate speeches, the coordinator of Onitsha North chapter Lady Franca Osaka and the Coordinator Mother Bernadette Anyaogu Memorial Technical and Vocational Institute Onitsha, Reverend Sister Mary Bernadette Obasi, charged the women to put in more effort in what they have learnt during the training saying that the skills they have acquired and grant given to them will help in meeting up with their financial obligations.

Earlier in a welcome address read by one of the beneficiaries, Mrs.
Henrietta Aneke, appreciated God and Dame Uche for the kind gesture and promised not to disappoint their benefactor while another beneficiary, Mrs. Edith Agusiobo appreciated all that were instrumental to the success of the programme.

Highpoint of the event include Exhibition of the widows’ projects and presentation of grants to the widows by Professor Dame Azikiwe.
