Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, has marked its eighth edition of Zik Lecture Series with a call for more functional and people oriented government in Nigeria to minimize migration rate in the country.
This year’s edition of the Zik Lecture series with the theme, “Migration and Development in Africa: Patterns, Issues and Challenges,” attracted dignitaries both from within and outside Africa, who were reminded of the need to build a more united and greater African continent.
Addressing the people, Governor Willie Obiano while speaking through the Deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, described late Great Zik of Africa as a man of integrity and an Icon whose replica is highly needed today for development and betterment of Nigeria and the entire Africa.
The Governor used the opportunity to remind Ndi Anambra of the need to join in commemorating the deeds and achievements of the great Icon on Monday, sixteenth of November, which is the maiden edition of the Zik’s day in Anambra which will from henceforth be observed in the state on sixteenth November of each year.
In his presentation on the theme of the event, a guest Speaker and the Immediate Past President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma who observed that the rise in today’s migration in Africa is caused by the continuous economic deterioration, joblessness and economic inequalities, called on Africa’s leadership to redouble efforts in promoting peace, good governance and socioeconomic opportunities at home and urged Africans in the diaspora to seek to follow the footsteps of the legendary Zik of Africa by returning to help in building of their nation.
Earlier in a remark, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Charles Esimone lamented that migration of Africans to other continents of the world has claimed many lives and negatively affected the economy of the Africa content, hence the need for urgent interventions of the leaders in making the continent more conducive and favourable for its inhabitants.
