Proprietors of Community Children’s Homes in the state have been cautioned to operate according to standard or risk closure.


The Commissioner for Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue, stated this during her routine tour and inspection of the homes to assess their operations and status.


After inspecting Perpetual Help Orphanage, Enugwu –Agidi, the Commissioner shut down the Home due to perceived child labour going on at the center, uncleanliness and other forms of misconduct.


Speaking to newsmen shortly after the inspection, the Commissioner said that at the primary objective of establishing a home is to take of children in a healthy and clean environment, lamenting that some people are messing up with the children in the name of running a home.


Lady Ndidi stated that government will not tolerate or accept anyone operating below standard asking them to live up to specifications and directed the management of the Homes to bring their monthly report and to ensure they are duly registered.


The Directress of the Perpetual Help Orphanage, Ngozi Okeke said some of the children were vulnerable children handed over them by their extended families, regretting the state of uncleanliness of the home and promised to put the place in order.


Some of the homes visited were Tender Love Awka, Blessed Nise, Faith Orphanage, model children community homes among others and the children at the home shut down were relocated to other places.
