It was an atmosphere of colours and mixed sensation as one thousand, eight hundred and fifty-one corps members took part in the 2019 Batch C, Stream One cultural carnival.
The Cultural Carnival held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, attracted government officials, traditional ruler of Mbaukwu, members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, friends and well-wishers, who trooped out in their numbers to watch the Corps Members showcase the vast Nigerian cultural heritage.
Culture, they say, is the people’s way of life; encompassing their language, religion, food, social habit, music and art.
It was a sight to behold as different tribes in Nigeria including, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, as well as other ethnic groups from areas such as Benue featured in the carnival.
The carnival which was first to be celebrated at the new Permanent Orientation Camp, was kick- started with procession by platoon one to ten, in their different attires, and were led by the Anambra State NYSC Coordinator and other camp officials.
Earlier in his address, the Anambra State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Kehinde Aremu, said that the aim of the event was to bring the corps members together in order to showcase their different rich culture, which, he noted that, if maintained, would help promote peace and unity among them and the society at large.
He described Anambra State as the most conducive state for youths and commended the state government for providing them with a conducive orientation camp.
On his part, the traditional ruler of Mbaukwu, Igwe Peter Anugwu, commended the corps members for promoting their various culture and urged them not to relent in championing their various cultural heritage.
In their various remarks, the Camp Director, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Nwafor, and Chairman Carnival Committee, Mr. Charles Anene, said the carnival will help to create opportunity for the corps members to gather, ease stress, and rejoice with one another during their stay in the orientation camp.
In the results of the carnival competitions, platoon ten took the third position for their various performances, platoon one came second, while platoon eight emerged the winner of the day.
Blessing Uchendu who covered the event reports that the event also featured sack race, egg race, martial arts, as well as performance by the NYSC Dance Group.
