Meaningful engagement of youths has been identified as a major weapon in the fight against crimes and insecurity in the society.


This was part of discourse during a one day empowerment programme organized by a non-governmental organization, Nibo Youth Dialogue, at the Nibo Civic Centre, Awka South Council Area.


Blessing Uchendu reports that Nibo Dialogue which attracted many Nibo Youths from ages of thirteen and above, government officers, school principals, teachers among others is a brainchild of concerned Nibo men and women both at home and in the diaspora, geared towards helping their youths to realize their potential in order to become economically independent in a legal and honest way.


Speaking during the program, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Obi Nwankwo, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, said that the mandate of his Ministry was to create an environment that would equip the youths to become employable, employers of labour and financial literates.


He noted that the Ministry has introduced invention-investor initiative where they would visit all the communities in the state to identify youths that are creative and innovative to be empowered, and urged the Nibo youths to key into what the Anambra State government is doing in the area of youth empowerment.


On his part, the President General of Nibo Town Union, who chaired the occasion, Chief Innocent Akuvue, said that the community is keen on supporting the government to empower their youths in order to keep their minds away from cultism, drug abuse and other social vices.
Some Nibo sons and daughters who spoke during the programme, including, Dr Uche Onyiliofor, Dr Lawrence Ughamadu, Chief Kodilichukwu Okelekwe and Mrs. Florence Okoro, centered their teachings on the theme of the programme which was “Bold Steps”, and viewed the youths as a force that can make or destroy any nation, stressing that if a greater percentage of the youth population are meaningfully engaged, the chances of reducing crime rate would be increased.


In their various remarks, the representative of the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Chinedu Nwankwo, the Chairman of the Committee, Engineer Chigbo Ubealor and Mr. Tobenna Obiano, called on their youths to take bold steps in life in order to discover, develop and deploy their potential effectively.


Some youths and students that spoke to the ABS including Wisdom Nwobu, Chinenye Anago, Emmanuel Oyudo and Precious Nwufo assured to make good use of the opportunity and to remain good ambassadors of their various communities and the nation at large.
