Anambra State government has reiterated its determination to take the lead in the reintroduction of history into the school curriculum across the State.
To this effect, the Ministry of Basic Education has organized a two day training for newly introduced history curriculum Teachers at the Anambra state Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB in Awka.
Staff reporter Njideka Okoye was there and reports that the training was attended by Heads of school, teachers in primary schools and junior secondary schools across the state.
Declaring the workshop open, Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha highlighted the importance of history to the society.
Professor Omenugha represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Nwabueze Nwankwo commended Governor Willie Obiano for approving the teachers training for effective teaching of history in schools which she said shows the governor’s commitment to the education sector, urging the teachers to show interest in the training.
In a paper presentation, the head, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council Anambra State office Awka, Dr. Johnson Ukpong while taking the teachers on Understanding the nine- year Basic Education History Curriculum said reintroduction of history in the education curriculum began in 2017 by NERDC and approved by NCE in 2018 meant for both basic and senior Sunday schools. while another resource person, Mr Philip Nwachukwu from Asaba who spoke on Breaking the History Curriculum into syllables, scheme of work, unit of work and lesson plan listed the aims and objectives of History curriculum, saying that the knowledge of history will provide transparency through national values and are projected and demonstrated by human society.
On their part the Deputy Chairman of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Lady Pat Offia and Board member Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Lady Nnonye Udegbunam and the Director Education Services Ministry of Basic Education Lady Vera Ogbalu stressed the need for the re-introduction of history, saying that people are losing focus due to lack of history, noting that history teaches about the past and relate it to the present and called on teachers to reciprocate this gesture by governor Obiano by ensuring effective teaching of history in their schools9
Some of the participants including Headmistress Central School Odoakpu Mrs Ego Mgbachi and Mr Dominic Okafor from Community Secondary school Umuezeanam commended both the State and the Federal governments for the bold initiative.
