The Federal government has inaugurated the completed Umunze Erosion and Flood Control and Road Improvement Work in Orumba South Local Government area.


The federal government commenced the project in September 2018 and completed it in June last year.


It involved the construction of a total length of three point three-zero kilometre with ten metre wide, double coated asphaltic pavement with line drains on both sides.


The road has total of fifty-two metre of nine hundred milimetre single cell concrete pipe culverts, thirty-five metre of nine hundred milimetre double cells concrete pipe culverts as cross culvert, with access culverts strategically and purposefully positioned.


Speaking during the event President Muhammadu Buhari represented by the Minister for Environment, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor said the project is one of the numerous projects Anambra state will benefit from his administration before it elapses.


President Buhari assured that his government will keep given all parts of the country a sense of belonging through equitable distribution of democracy dividend and infrastructural development across the country.


In a remark, Governor Willie Obiano represented by his Deputy, Dr.
Nkem Okeke appreciated President Buhari for the various interventions of his government in Anambra State, especially as it concerns erosion related issues, which he identified as one of the major challenges the state is facing, expressing the hope that Anambra will keep benefitting from the Federal government as there are still many problems to be addressed.


Governor Obiano cautioned Ndi Anambra against indiscriminate disposal of wastes on drainage channels, and construction of buildings on waterways, saying that such practice causes erosion.


Earlier in his speech, the Permanent Secretary Ecological Fund Office Abuja, Dr. Habiba Lawal Represented by Director in the Ministry, Mr.
Felix Okeke, called on the community members to take full ownership of the project by protecting it, in order to ensure its maintenance and sustainability.


Speaking on behalf of the community, the President General Umunze Progressive Union, Mr. John Akanyeonu thanked the federal government for the completion of the project and assured that they will protect it against vandalization.
