The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has once again allayed the fears of South Easterners that the ongoing construction of the second Niger bridge may be abandoned, saying the three hundred and thirty-six billion naira fund meant for the project is intact.

Senator Ngige, who spoke to journalists in Awka, described it as the major achievement of President Muhammadu Buhari, unlike his predecessors, who planned the construction of the bridge on a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

While saying that the bridge was “speedily going on” with about forty-five per cent work done, Senator Ngige, revealed that the contractor has made an undertaking to deliver the project before the appointed date of 2022.

He blamed the initial hiccup on demands for compensation, adding that the cost of the bridge from exit route of Delta and the South-East and the South-South is about three hundred and thirty-six billion naira.

The Minister assured that the federal government is building the bridge as one of its five flagship projects, which are the Lagos and Ibadan Expressway, East-West Road, Second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and the Manbilla project.
