An England based charity organization, New Bethel Christian Centre, has donated drums of diesel, one big life cow, cash, books and other writing materials worth hundreds of thousands of naira to the inmates of Nigerian Correctional Service, Onitsha.
The team led by a member of its Board of Trustees and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Venerable Amaechi Okwuosa, said the gesture was in continuation of his annual visit to prisons, a humanitarian service he maintained since two decades in England and subsequently here in Nigeria.
Venerable Okwuosa explained that they came to lift up the spirits of the inmates encourage, support and give them hope during their incarceration as little step in the right direction would definitely aid their reintegration into the society.
While interacting with the inmates, Venerable Okwuosa, who announced that he is facilitating the payment of fines to enable the release of inmates, who have option of fine but are unable to regain their freedom for non-payment of the fines, noting that it will go a long way in decongesting the Prisons.
He however commended Governor Willie Obiano for his tremendous work and services in the state especially giving a facelift to Onitsha Correctional center through the rebuilding of the fallen walls.
Venerable Okwuosa was accompanied on the visit by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on NUPENG, Petroleum and Union Matters, Comrade Peter Nwosu and some members of the Christian group.
Receiving the team, the Deputy Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Services Mr. Valentine Nwosu, who appreciated the gesture, revealed that the generosity of Venerable Okwuosa, led to the graduation of four inmates from the Correctional Service, through the National Open University.
He reiterated that Venerable Okwuosa has been a regular face to their facility and has always supported and donated to them.
