The 2020 Health Weekend has ended in Awka, with a call on the people to embrace attitude that promotes healthy living.


The 2020 Health Weekend which is an annual event of the Pope John Paul The Second Major Seminary, Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area, offers opportunities for health experts to exchange knowledge with participants and the Seminary community on ways of preventing and managing killer diseases such as Heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, ulcer, hepatitis, as well as obstructive sleep apnea.


Joseph Egbeocha who attended the event reports that the event, which has as its theme: “Health care system and the danger of killer diseases,” attracted the Rector of the Seminary, Reverend Father Cyril Udebunu, the political class, government officials the mission and private hospitals in the State.


Dean of the Students Affairs, and Moderator of Health Department of the Seminary, Reverend Father Modestus Anyaegbu, said the annual health weekend is part of the holistic formation of seminarians preparatory for their priestly vocation.


In his paper presentation at the event, the Acting Director of Medical Services, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Dr. Patrick Ezeno, regretted that cases of killer diseases are on the increase in the country due to hardship.


He however, advised people to always maintain regular exercises, good intake of water and air, regular exposure to sunlight, and good interpersonal relationship.


A Pharmacist, Mr Ifeanyi Ezechukwunonso, while calling for proper processing of natural foods, urged health workers to synergise in providing adequate healthcare for the masses.


Earlier in his address, the Chief Infirmarian of the Seminary, Mr.
Paschal Obelenwa, said the theme of the event was chosen to enlighten people on the dangers of the diseases that kill silently in present time.


A participant, Chief Felix Okeke, while commending organizers of the event, appealed for financial supports from individuals and groups to improve healthcare delivery in the Seminary.
Highpoints of the event including cultural musical and drama presentations, as well as issuance of certificate of participation to guests.
