In a bid to forestall carnage on the Amawbia Bypass, Anambra State Government has constructed barriers to prevent articulated vehicles from plying the road.

The barricades were installed at the Amawbia Y-junction off the Flyover that leads to residential areas of the community to restrict heavy duty vehicles, especially petrol tankers owing to the increasing rate of tanker explosion and to prevent such vehicles from destroying properties and claiming lives of the citizenry.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after inspecting the area, the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Christian Madubuko, said the move was to discourage articulated vehicles from using the road, especially during the day as the area is known to be housing schools, hospitals, markets and residential buildings among others.

He advised commercial drivers against over loading their vehicles which may lead to accident and traffic congestion.
Dr Madubuko said that most of the hinter roads were not built for big trucks to ply, due to its heavy weight and appealed that such vehicles should take alternative routes.

He cautioned against any attempt by road users to dismantle the barriers, adding that anybody caught should be made to face the full weight of law.
