The need for victims of sexual violence to have access to comprehensive medical care has been stressed.
A reproductive health expert, Barrister Hauwa Shekaru, stressed this in her presentation during Ipas Media Training for journalists on women’s sexual reproductive health and rights, in Owerri, Imo state.
Ipas is a Non-governmental Organization that focuses on advancing women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
Barrister Shekaru, who spoke on value clarification and attitude transformation, said people should not be castigated because of their personal choice of reproductive health and rights.
Earlier in an opening remark, one of the Ipas officials, Mrs. Doris Ikpeze, explained the objectives of the organization to include among other things, building a network of journalists that would be strong advocates of women’s sexual reproductive health and rights in Anambra and Abia states.
In his comment, a resource person, Mr. Emmanuel Ugoji, encouraged journalists to read widely to broaden their minds and as well inform the public accurately.
During her lecture, an Obstetrician, Dr Emily Nzeribe, who spoke on the topic, “burden of maternal death from unsafe abortions in Nigeria”, opined that unsafe abortions contribute immensely to maternal deaths.
She also noted the need for women to avail themselves opportunity to benefit from family planning, adding that this would go a long way in reducing maternal mortality.
The three day workshop, which featured an interactive session, attracted journalists from Anambra and Abia states.
