The Anambra State government has commenced work to
resuscitate the Obizi-Uga Regional Water Scheme, which will benefit over fourteen Communities in Aguata Local Government Area.


Governor Willie Obiano during an inspection visit to the scheme disclosed that the facility which had been moribund for ten years, will commence operations by April, this year.


Government House correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the project which spans forty kilometers covers fourteen communities, and has eight over head tanks located in benefitting communities,including Ekwulobia, Igboukwu, Uga and Isuofia.


The Project is a partnership between Anambra State government and European Union.


Governor Obiano, who assured of his support to complete the project, said that he has the guarantee of the contractor that the project will be delivered by April.


The Governor said that due to the importance of the project, the access road has been graded, assuring that relevant portions of the road will be asphalted, for easier access.


In his remarks, the Commissioner for Public Utilities and Water Resources, Engineer Emeka Ezenwanne appreciated the Governor’s intervention in providing portable water to the State citizenry, noting that Obizi River will generate almost seven thousand cubic meters of water, per hour for the scheme.


The European Union representative, Traditional rulers and stakeholders in the local government area, were on ground to receive the Governor.


Recall that in recognition of the importance of portable water in the life of the State citizenry, on the second of June, 2015, the state House of Assembly passed a bill to establish the Anambra State Water Supply and Sanitation Law, 2015.


The bill which was also signed into law by Governor Obiano, established the Anambra State Asset Holding Company, the Anambra State Small Town Water and Sanitation Agency, Rural Water and Sanitation Agency, the Regulatory Commission and roles of government and the private sector and for other matters connected therewith.
