The Director Anambra State Fire Service, Engineer Martin Agbili has cautioned people to be mindful of the way they handle inflammable materials especially this harmattan season to avoid fire outbreak.
Engineer Agbili gave the charge while reminding people what to do and what not to do during harmattan.
Engineer Agbili who said that harmattan is associated with dryness urged people to be mindful of how they deal with elements that can cause fire outbreak such as electricity, cooking gas, bush burning and PMS products.
The Anambra State fire Service Director advised people to always switch off their electrical appliances when leaving the house and when light is off, cut grasses ten feet away from their buildings, keep gas cylinder outside the kitchen, and out of the reach of children and open their windows twenty minutes before putting on gas cooker.
He noted that people opt for gas cooker now more than before because it is cheaper and saves time but the risk involved is hazardous if carelessly used , advising people to take precautionary measures if they must use it.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary ministry of Environment, Dr. Emma Okafor said that harmattan makes environment prone to fire outbreak due to its dry nature, urging people to always clear their environments of dry leaves to prevent fire outbreak.
Dr. Okafor frowned at those that indulge in bush burning, which he said degrades the environment and a times affect crops, advising people to take ownership of their environment especially during the harmattan.
