The Committee for the review of the Anambra State Criminal Code Law has been inaugurated in Awka.
The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Uju Nwogu inaugurated the Committee during a workshop on Plea Bargain for Magistrates and Director of Public Prosecution in Anambra State, organized by Rule of Law and Anti Corruption, ROLAC, British Council and European Union in Collaboration with Anambra State Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice in Awka.
Inaugurating the Committee, Dr. Nwogu said that the State’s criminal code law was last reviewed in 1991, hence the need to revisit the law, to ensure that it is in tandem with international best practices.
Dr. Nwogu charged members of the newly inaugurated Committee to do a thorough job that will be acceptable.
For the State Programme Co-ordinator, ROLAC Anambra State, Mrs Josephine Onah, the Committee must put in their best to ensure that they will develop a criminal code law that will satisfy the yearnings of the citizenry.
Responding on-behalf of other members, the Chairman of the Committee, Justice Pete Obiorah said that if the law is strengthened, there will be a better society.
The Committee is made up of legal practitioners, the Academia, Security agencies, Civil Society organizations among others.
