Justice Onochie Anyachebelu has been sworn in as the substantive Chief Judge of Anambra State.
Governor Willie Obiano performed the ceremony at the Government House, Awka.
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that the event was attended by top government officials, members of the State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor, among others.
The swearing in ceremony followed Justice Anyachebelu’s recommendation by the National Judicial Council as well as confirmation as substantive Chief Judge by the Anambra State House of Assembly on eleventh February, 2020.
Performing the function, Governor Obiano who described Justice Anyachebelu as a distinguished Judge and consummate gentleman, expressed confidence in his ability to take the State judiciary to lofty heights, having done well in the acting capacity.
While commending the transparency of the State judiciary, judging from the number of cases, that ends up in the Appeal Court, Governor Obiano asked the Chief Judge to help find a way to decongest the Correctional Centers which have a lot of awaiting cases.
He also suggested setting a special days to hear criminal cases, which he said will help solve the challenge of recycling criminals.
In her remarks the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Uju Nworgu explained that the swearing in is the final step to the process and commended the Governor for being a respecter of the rule of law, assuring of continued synergy among the three tiers of government.
Responding, Justice Anyachebelu thanked the Governor for all the support he has accorded the judiciary, pointing out that the decongestion of Correctional Center rests on the justice sector which has many players including the Police, Correctional Centers and the Judiciary which is a key player, pledging on behalf of the judiciary, to perform their part to the best of their ability.
Recall that on September, Fourth 2019, Governor Obiano swore-in Justice Anyachebelu as acting Chief Judge of Anambra State.
Justice Anyachebelu a native of Oraukwu in Idemili North Local Government area, was born on twenty fourth May, 1961.
