The International Community observed last Sunday as Rotary Day.
Rotary was formed by a Chicago Attorney, Mr Paul Harris with four others on twenty-third February 1905.


The aim is to enable professionals with diverse backgrounds come together and exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.


In this special report correspondent Joseph Egbeocha takes a critical look at the role of Rotary in Human development.


Speaking on the event, the Assistant Governor of Rotary International District 9142, Dr Dennis Ekemezie, said the one hundred and fifteen years of existence of Rotary has witnessed sustained service delivery to humanity in areas of achieving peace, fighting diseases, especially polio eradication, calling for its sustenance.


Dr Ekemezie, who explained that Rotary Foundation is the supplier of the needs of the club, urged members to mobilize support from the public to enable the club sustain its services to humanity.


On his part, the President of Rotary Club of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Mr Kanayochukwu Obidigbo, said the club has done a lot in its foundations, where members pool resources in addressing needs of indigent people, describing the Club as a non-governmental organization accepted by the United Nations, and with membership open to people desirous of serving humanity.


It was gathered that Rotary, first established in Nigeria in Kano, has had eighty-two formations with about five districts.


District 9142 of the club, is made up of seven States including Anambra which have benefited from the foundation when a team of Medical Doctors visited the State and carried out medical services free.
