The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts has commenced verification of the audited financial record of the twenty one local government areas in the state for the year 2018 in Awka.


House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that speaking to journalists while verifying the financial spending of the Njikoka Local Government Area for the year under review, the Chairman, House Committee on Public Accounts, Sir Somtoochukwu Udeze explained that the essence of the exercise was to encourage transparency and accountability in the management of Local Government funds.


Sir Somtoochukwu charged all the local government councils coming to defend their financial transactions for the year 2018 to appear with all the relevant documents that will enable them do a thorough job for the benefit of the people, as defaulters will be punished accordingly.


Expressing his gratitude to the Committee, the Transition Committee Chairman, Njikoka Local Government Area, Chief George Ozo commended the Committee for living up to their oversight responsibility, adding that they will carry out their directive to move the local government council forward.


Meanwhile, the Aguata, Dunukofia, Idemili, Anaocha, Anambra West Local Government Councils also appeared before the Committee and defended their financial spending for the year under review, while the Committee described their performances as satisfactory.
