The Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Council Area, Mr. Leo Nwuba, has flagged-off a sensitization and awareness campaign on  Lassa Fever and Coronavirus. 


The awareness, according to the Council Boss became imperative following the spread of the epidemic around the globe, bearing in mind also, that the State Capital play host to numerous visitors from all parts of the world hence the need for all to be at alert to prevent the outbreak of the deadly diseases.


Correspondent Chibuzo Obidike reports that according to Mr. Nwuba, the campaign was aimed at ensuring that people especially stakeholders, live up to their  responsibilities in preventing Lassa fever and coronavirus diseases outbreaks in their areas saying that the Campaign is going on simultaneously in all the communities,  markets, and other flashpoints in the council area. He assured of the Council’s commitment to activities aimed at strengthening the awareness and prevention of Lassa fever and coronavirus diseases.  


In their various lectures at the places visited, the Deputy Directors, Environmental Health Services, Awka South Local Government Area, Mr. Augustine Nsionu and Mrs. Valeria Ibeh described the two viral diseases as  deadly which all should be aware of and listed the mode of transmission to include person to person, exposure to the virus in the blood, tissue, urine, faeces and other bodily secretions of an infected individual, and called for the promotion of good environmental and personal hygiene in all places.


The Environmental Health Unit of the Local Government Area accompanied by  staff of the council were later dispatched to the nine communities of the Local Government Area , markets, schools and churches for the enlightenment and sensitization campaign while proper ways of hand washing and other preventive methods were demonstrated to the people as well as hand washing facilities installed at strategic points.
