The Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Indigenous Medicine and Herbal Practice, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim says plans are in top gear to introduce an executive bill to the Anambra State House of Assembly for the appropriate legislation that will standardize the operations in the sector and make Anambra State a hub for indigenous medicine research.


Speaking to the ABS in Awka, Dr Ibezim maintained that the idea is to help expunge some unwholesome practices in the traditional Medicine and encourage the identification of other aspects of indigenous medicine that remains unexplored.


He said that when such a bill is passed an assented to by the Governor, it will go a long way in checking the activities of quacks or fake traditional medicine practitioners.


According to him the forthcoming International Traditional Herbal fair is targeted at exposing the potential in the sector to enable the investors see what Anambra State had in addition to assisting in improving them.


Dr Ibezim disclosed that Anambra State government has concluded plans to set up research centres and to collaborate with institutions of higher learning in carrying out joint research in the areas of Indigenous Medicine as well as maximizing the huge potential that are inherent in traditional Medicine.


According to Dr Ibezim, traditional Medicine has been the main source of health care for the vast majority of Nigerians, adding that Nigerians use traditional Medicine for the management of both communicable and non communicable diseases such as cancer, malaria, HIV and AIDS, diabetes, hypertension tuberculosis among others.
