Catholic faithful in Abuja led by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, defied the first rain in Abuja for the year, to hold a prayer procession.
The faithful were all dressed in black, bearing placards with different inscriptions such as “stop this killings now”, “stop shedding Innocent blood” among others.
Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja Bureau reports that the rosary procession was in protest against incessant killings in Nigeria perceived to be against christians especially in the Northern part of Nigeria.
Speaking at the prayer procession, the President of CBCN, Archbishop Augustine Akubeze, called on the Federal government to do all it can to secure the release of leah Shaibu and others still in Boko Haram’s custody.
He decried what he called federal government’s nonchalant attitude to insecurity in the nation.
Archbishop Akubeze who expressed dissatisfaction with the situation of the country, maintained that enough is enough and urged President Buhari to seek intervention of the international bodies to surmount the security challenges in the country.
Earlier in a homily at the opening mass for the 2020 plenary session of the CBCN, the Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, said the greatest temptation in Nigeria today is that of believing in the country at all costs.
According to him, although government continues to assure the populace that they are doing everything in their power to arrest the ugly trend of insecurity, permanent solution and peace will continue to elude the country unless Nigerians turn to God for help.
Archbishop Kaigama, stressed that the trend of resorting to self help is indicative of the distrust of government and its security agencies by Nigerians.
The Bishop’s Conference plenary continues with several programme and activities lined up.
