Today is international Women’s Day.
The day was established by the United Nations Women ten years ago to promote gender equality and to end gender based violence as well as promote peace.
It is also a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement’s of women.

reacting to the significance of the day,the member representing Nnewi North Constituency at the State House Of Assembly, Honourable Nonso Okafor said that the importance of women in the society will not be over emphasized as they play indispensable roles in nurturing, moulding and general child upbringing in every family, stating that when there is peace and tranquility in the family, the society will be a better place for every one.
Honourable Okafor who is the Chairman House Committee On Gender Equality calls for active participation of women in politics as they will contribute positively to nation building and advised them to live up to the task of building a Godly home filed with virtues, morals and positive character.
In her reaction the Commissioner for Children And Women Affairs,Lady Ndidi Mezue said that gone are the days when women are relegated to the background urging women to sit up and take their rightful positions in the society.
Lady Ndidi said that the present administration heeded the call for thirty five percent affairmative action noting that there is upto sixty percent women in Obianos government, advising women to uphold peace, keep strict watch over their wards and remain prayerful.
Also speaking, a former member, who represented Idemmili North at the State House of Assembly , Mrs Nkoli Mmegbuanaze observed that women are institutions and when harnessed properly will make positive impact on the society and urged state and federal governments to give more women key positions of responsibility especially in politics to optimally harness their potential while calling on women to be submissive to their husbands and contribute to growth of the family.
Contributing,a Priest in Anglican church,Reverend Nnabike Mmaduka maintained that women should be celebrated adding that the church is in support of their involvement in nation building as they are pilllars and their presence will bring balance and positive living.
This year’s theme is “I am Generational Equality, Realizing Women’s Rights.”
