Massive work is on going at the Hundred Foot Road gully erosion control site, Uruagu Nnewi, in Nnewi North council area.


Inspecting work on the site, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor said the contract was awarded by by Governor Willie Obiano at the tune of three billion naira ,to save the people from the devastating effect of the erosion.


Works Correspondent Ngozi Obileri reports that at the site, fillng of the gully was on going as many heavy duty vehicles were seen tipping sand and leveling the heaps of sand already tipped.


Construction of water channels for proper discharge of water was also on going at the erosion site.


Speaking shortly after the inspection, Engineer Ifejiofor expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, noting that the IDC construction firm handling the project has done quite a lot in checking the erosion which was twenty five meters deep.


Engineer Ifejiofor said that discharge channel will be completed before the rains set in proper.


He appealed to the Federal government to declare state of emergency on erosion menace in South East zone, especially Anambra state , noting that similar erosion disaster has been controlled in Obosi with state meager resources, which according to him was too much for the state to handle.


On his part, the IDC construction manager in charge of the project Engineer Yusuf Zrebb said they have the capacity to complete the job in due time. UPSOT.
