Thousands of Catholic faithful in Awka Diocese have trooped out in their numbers to protest what they described as incessant killings of Christians in different parts of the country.

The prayer protest kicked off at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

The faithful marched in a rosary procession to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Awka, carrying placards with inscriptions such as: “stop killing Christians, “enough is enough”, “there is freedom of worship”, “Jesus is not a terrorist”, “life is sacred”, “stop shedding innocent blood” and numerous other write-ups.

Speaking at the end of the procession at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Reverend Father Francis Chidume while delivering the message of the Catholic Bishops Conference to mark the event, said it was a directive by the Bishops’ Conference that all Catholic Dioceses in Nigeria embark on the protest and urged government at levels to put an end to the killings going on in parts of the Country especially that of Christians.

Reverend Father Chidume regretted that the country can no longer protect the lives of its citizens, charging all Christians to stand up to the evil through prayers.

In a message earlier, Reverend Father Innocent Nwafor said the procession was to drive home their grievances as they are no longer happy with the incessant killings of Christians in Nigeria.

He added that it was also to protest the betrayal of brotherhood, and the value placed on animals instead of human beings.

Another priest at the Cathedral, Reverend Father Anthony Ezeokeke expressed the hope that things would change for better as God himself will fight the battle.

He charged all Christians to join in securing and saving lives by being their brother’s keeper , and avoid break down of law and order.

The event climaxed with benediction with the Blessed Sacrament.
