Despite the state government’s efforts towards promoting road safety by constructing Pedestrian bridges at strategic places in Onitsha, some residents still go out of their way to cross the four lanes Enugu Onitsha Express way.


Correspondent, Emengini Osadebe, who witnessed some pedestrians crossing the four lanes Expressway with its big drainage channels reports that most of them especially ladies could not cross the drainage channels with ease.


Speaking to the ABS, some commuters, including Messrs Godwin Uche, Sunday Nze and Charles Odinma, who went down the memory when they were clamouring for a pedestrian bridge, condemned the act of crossing the express way by commuters now it has been provided by the government.
They called on the state government to set up a task force that will apprehend and prosecute defaulters to serve as a deterrent to others.


Mrs. Ugochi Nwankwo and Reverend Ken Ezeikpe, who lamented that it is risky to cross the express way, attributed it to lack of orientation and sensitization of the people on the dangers associated with it and commended the state government for prioritizing the safety of Ndi Anambra.


Reacting to the development, the Director State Operations, Anambra Traffic Management Agency ATMA, Mr Samuel Ezenduka maintained that the present administration is interested in the safety of lives and property of Ndi Anambra hence the construction and rehabilitation of the MCC pedestrian bridge but regretted that some people still put their lives at risk by crossing the express way.


Mr Ezenduka disclosed that his Agency will commence
apprehending and prosecuting defaulters adding that there is still law that prohibits people from crossing the express way.
