The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Industry and his Transport counterpart to decongest traffic in parts of the state by establishing more Car Parks and dedicated Bus stands for public transport.
It also called for evacuation of sellers trading along the roads in major markets in Awka, Ekwulobia, Nnewi and Onitsha environs.
The House passed the resolution following a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Aguata One Constituency, Dr. Carter Umeh during plenary.
Throwing light on the motion, the Lawmaker made it clear that traffic congestion in these cities can be minimized to more acceptable level by ensuring that there is investment in road infrastructure, adequate urban planning, evacuation of sellers from the pedestrian walk ways.
He maintained that creation of more car parks in markets for private cars and others who wish to shop rather than parking by the road side and establishing a dedicated bus stops for public transport and provision of traffic lights as well as more traffic wardens would arrest the situation.
On his part, the member representing Anambra West Constituency, Honourable Patrick Udeoba, noted that decongestion of the areas will result to economic benefits which could raise Gross Domestic Product and living standards of the people and the internally generated revenue of the state.
The member representing Dunukofia Constituency, Chief Lawrence Ezeudu and his Anaocha One Constituency counterpart, Honourable Ebele Ejiofor also spoke in favour of the motion.
Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor described the motion as apt and read out the resolution to the House, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote
