he Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, is currently implementing initiatives that will contribute to the development of oil producing communities, improve on the local economy and management of conflict.


The Executive Secretary of the Board, Mr Simbi Wabote, outlined these interventions during a one-day youth sensitization workshop for Corps members on the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development and capacity building initiative in Awka.
Blessing Uchendu reports that the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board was established by the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act which came into effect on April twenty-second, 2010.


In a Keynote address, Mr Wabote represented by the General Manager, Corporate Communications and Zonal Coordination of the Board, Mr Ginah Otonye, who stated that Nigeria is one of the leading nations in the world petroleum industry map which is very advanced in the area of local content and noted that other African countries like Kenya, Gabon, Uganda, Congo amongst others had previously sought for Nigerians guidance on local content.


He listed some of the key thrusts of the ACT to include, integrating oil producing communities into oil and gas value chain, foster institutional collaboration, maximize participation of Nigerians in oil and gas activities, link oil and gas sector to other sectors of economy and maximize utilization of Nigerian resources.


Making a presentation on the activities and achievements of Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, Mr Ginah Otonye, stated that certain parameters were necessary for sustainable local content implementation, listing them to include, gap analysis of the industry, capacity building, regulatory framework, research and development.


He added that Nigerian content had helped the government and citizens of the country to retain substantial industry spend, increase in participation of locals in the industry and indigenous ownership of critical industry equipment, advising course participants on the virtues of collaboration, political will, advocacy and well defined roadmap for sustainable development of Nigeria.


Some of the participants, including Godswill Chibueze and Ntieneobong Johnson, described the workshop as essential and promised to put into action what they had learnt.
