Today is World Water Day.The day which is celebrated on the twenty-second of March every year since 1993 was adopted as an international day by the United Nations General Assembly and focuses on the importance of freshwater, sustainable management of freshwater resources, as well as creating awareness on the two-point-two billion people living without access to safe water in the world.
Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo who sampled people opinion on the essence of the day reports that
Water they say is life and water is very important in all human activities.
For this reason, this year’s World Water Day, focuses on water and climate change, how the two are inextricably linked and tries to create awareness on how the use of water will help reduce floods, droughts, scarcity and pollution
and also help fight climate change itself.
Speaking on the essence of the day, the state Commissioner for Public Utility, Engineer Emeka Ezenwanne who described water as an essential commodity for human survival, recommended that people should always consume enough water, maintain regular hand washing, especially now coronavirus is ravaging the world.
Engineer Ezenwanne while listing various achievements of Governor Willie Obiano in the water sector geared towards providing the residents with portable and clean water, including the rehabilitation of various water schemes in the state, partnering with international organizations to tackle water challenges in the hinterlands by drilling more than ninety-five solar boreholes in different communities of the state, and extra boreholes through the Ministry of Public Utility and other ministries, said that the state would soon privatize the water sector as a means of ensuring suitability in the sector.
Contributing, Mr Emeka Okwuogwu, Program Manager Rural Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASA, called on people to properly manage freshwater, and desist from compound interlocking, rather to use carpet grass and plants in their compounds, to prevent global warming and shortage of water.
On his part, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Power Energy and Water Resources, Engineer Victor Meju called on private organizations and individuals to assist the present government in its quest to ensure portable and clean water for the residents.
