Despite Anambra state government’s directive that all schools in the state be closed with effect from today, some schools in Awka and other parts of the state opened for the day’s academic activities, before they were forced to close immediately.
Most other schools however complied with the order, by keeping their pupils and students at home while their school gates were under lock and key.
When ABS News crew visited most of the schools, pupils and students were seen going home, while others were playing around the schools’ vicinity.
Speaking to the ABS, the Headmistress, Community Primary school Amawbia, Lady Evelyn Oficha said that she dismissed few pupils, who came to school after teaching them some safety measures and basic hygiene lessons.
A parent from Enugu State, who came to pick her child at Girls Secondary school Awka, Mrs. Chiamaka Onuigwe however expressed reservations over the shutdown of the school, saying that the virus is yet to be recorded in Anambra state.
An SS1 student of Girls Secondary school Awka, Miss Precious Onah, who was equally not happy with the development, reasoned that government would have allowed them to finish their examinations.
Corona virus which is ravaging parts of the world is beginning to rear its ugly head in Africa, and Nigeria in particular.
Since an immediate cure is not yet handy, the federal government and Anambra state government are enforcing preventive measures for now to avert the virus.
Part of the measures is the order against crowd gathering, as witnessed in schools, churches, markets and community event places.
