Police operatives attached to B’ Division Awka have arrested five suspected members of a notorious syndicate who specializes in stealing phones from unsuspecting passengers in commercial vehicles and using the handsets to hack into bank accounts of the victims to siphon their money.


The suspects who were apprehended at the UNIZIK Temporary Site junction Awka are, one Uche Louis aged twenty-one from Imo State, Junior Abamu aged twenty-five from Edo State, Chinemelem Anugwam aged twenty-one from Imo State, Agaro Afo aged twenty-six from Delta State and Abraham Patrick aged twenty-five from Cross River State respectively.


A statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State Mr Haruna Muhammed said their arrest was sequel to an earlier arrest of a syndicate member , Nkem Emmanuel aged twenty-six from Delta, at Aroma with a Nokia three-two android phone valued at thirty-seven thousand naira, which he allegedly stole from his co-passenger, while traveling in a commercial tricycle.


Exhibits recovered from the suspects include twenty three assorted cell phones, thirteen memory cards, dried leaves suspected to be Canabis sativa, Cordeine Syrup, assorted drugs and cash of one hundred and two thousand naira only.


According to the statement many victims were contacted and they have come forward to identify both suspects and their property.


According to the Police Public Relations Officer all the suspects have made voluntary confessional statements and will be charged to court on conclusion of investigations.


Meanwhile, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police Mr John Abang, has enjoined the Public whose handsets or other valuables were stolen through similar modus to report at B’ Division Awka for possible identification and collection.
