Over one hundred indigent men and women in Umuawulu, Awka South council area have received cash gift and tubers of yam from the traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Joel Egwuonu.


The gifts, handed over to them at the palace of the traditional ruler at Umuenu village, Umuawulu, were aimed at cushioning the effects of the present hard time, escalated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Correspondent Ngozi Obileri was present during the presentation of the gifts and reports that thirty out of the women were given twenty thousand naira each to aid them in 2020 farming season as was promised by the monarch last year.


The rest including men were given five thousand naira and tubers of yam each.


In his speech, Igwe Egwuonwu said it was to reduce the hardship necessitated by the covid-19 pandemic.


Igwe Egwuonwu commended Governor Obiano for all the measures he has put in place to prevent the epidemic from entering into the state, and for the stimulus packages he gave Ndi Anambra to cushion the effect of coronavirus pandemic, even as he prayed God to bless a daughter of the community for donating towards the event.


He advised his subjects to always adhere to the directives by government to avoid contracting Covid-19, and also appealed for support to the less privileged this trying times .


On his part, the President General of the community Chief Iyke Nkala, who commended Anambra state government for all its efforts in protecting Ndi Anambra from the deadly virus especially by providing stimulus packages for traders and business owners, keke and shuttle bus drivers as well as giving two hundred bags of rice to every community, thanked Igwe Egwuonwu for his magnanimity which he is known for.


Some of the beneficiaries including Angelina Ndubisi, Esther Orji and Amaka Agunwa, expressed gratitude to the monarch for having their interest at heart and prayed God to bless him abundantly.
