Anambra State Government has commended the passion and commitment of frontline health workers, especially Nurses and Midwives, in delivering healthcare services to the people.
The commendation is coming on the heels of this year’s World Health Day, set aside to celebrate and remind world leaders the critical role Nurses and Midwives play, and to highlight their current status in keeping the International Community healthy.
The Secretary to the Anambra State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, who gave the commendation, said beyond contributing in materials and actions, Nurses and Midwives, and indeed all front line health workers, often pay the supreme sacrifices in a bid to save the world from diseases, especially pandemics, and restated the commitment of the Government in improving their working conditions.
In his remarks, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, explained that Nurses and Midwives are integral part of team fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that there are sustained efforts by the Government in retraining healthcare services providers on competence and cases management.
Speaking to the ABS, the State Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, Comrade Edith Onwuka, urged members to deploy their professionalism and best ethical standards in handling issues arising from the current Covid-19 pandemic, calling on the State Government to continuously provide protective equipment and other incentives for healthcare workers, to enable them provide healthcare services in this period.
Some of the Nurses, including a Chief Nursing Officer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Mrs. Chima Umobi, Miss Chioma Omenife, and Miss Uchenna Ochuba, who have had different years of experience in the practice, called on young people, male and female, to develop interest in the career, regardless of attendant challenges, adding that it pains Nurses and Midwives when patients in their care die in the course of treatment, as Nurses and Midwives are the closest persons to patients.
They further called for expansion of retraining programmes and internship opportunities for graduates in the profession, to create a pool of human resources that will serve the health needs of the society, especially during pandemic outbreaks, such as the current Covid-19.
The theme for this year’s World Health Day is: “Support Nurses and Midwives.”
