Anambra State government has announced the release of fifty four inmates of the Correctional Centers in the State.

Governor Willie Obiano made the pronouncement during a Statewide broadcast at his Country home, Aguleri, stressing that the move is to decongest the correctional facilities. The governor restated that the lock down is still in place across the State.

According to the Governor who announced that the index case is responding to treatment, thirty nine contacts have been tracked, out of which five are in the protection centers. He said others are quarantined in their respective homes, adding that initial six samples taken returned negative.

Regarding the Nkpor skirmishes, the Governor said that the State will take care of the medical expenses of the injured as well as undertake the burial expenses of the deceased, calling on citizens to adhere to all directives against the pandemic, even as he asked security operatives to always uphold high professional standards.

Governor Obiano maintained that boundaries in the State remain closed, urging people to minimize inter-city movement within the State, saying that food markets in the State will only open on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Among other palliatives, the Governor announced that the State government will soon commence distribution of four hundred bags of rice to youths in communities across the State, calling on Traditional rulers, Presidents-General, women and Youth leaders to draw a list of beneficiaries which should be forwarded to the Ministry of Local government and Chieftaincy affairs.

While calling on the Governor to sustain tempo on public health concerns in the State, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), who is on a working visit to the State, advised ndi Anambra to join hands with the government in the fight against the virus.

Speaking to the ABS, the member representing Anambra East and West, in the national assembly, Chief Chinedu Obidigwe called on the federal government to look inwards and seek ways to accommodate all sections of the Country while disbursing palliatives.

He commended the State government and the house of Assembly for their efforts so far, calling on ndi Anambra to sustain adherence to directives issued by stakeholders in the COVID-19 fight.
