Anambra state government has commenced distribution of 72,400 bags of rice to youths in communities across the state.

The largese is part of Governor Willie Obiano-led administration’s response to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that event took place at Aguleri in Anambra East council area.

Recall that during the last broadcast by the Governor on Wednesday, 22nd April, 2020, he announced that his government will distribute the bags of rice to youths.

Commissioner for Local and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Greg Obi made the presentations to representatives of youth leaders in the state on behalf of the Governor.

According to him, the intervention was a further demonstration that the present administration is very responsive to needs of the people, stressing that the criteria stipulate that the rice should go to the needy and vulnerable youths of the communities, noting that each household should not recieve more than one bag of rice.

Chief Obi who noted that when added together, palliatives to the elderly and youths which amounts to over four hundred million naira would have gotten to fifty percent households in the State, adding that the lists of beneficiaries must be vetted by Traditional rulers, Presidents-General and Woman Leaders of the various communities.

He adjudged the last distribution to the elderly as peaceful and assured that PMMO is also on ground to monitor compliance.

Also speaking , the Commissioner for Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy, Mr Afam Mbanefo, while applauding the move, pointed out that it will be impactful,adding that it shows the youth that government is close to them, irrespective of religious, political affiliation or stratification.

Speaking on behalf of youth bodies in the state, the National President of ASATU Youth Wing, Mr Patrick Ayamba noted that it shows that the youth are an important part in the scheme of things in Anambra state, promising to ensure that the items get to people that deserve it.

State Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Egwuatu., President General of ASATU in the State, Chief Alex Onukwue, among others were present as the distribution ceremony. .
