A one-time Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukwuma
Soludo, has praised the latest response pattern of African leaders to
the challenge posed by the coronavirus pandemic, saying the gradual
easing of the lockdown is commendable.
Professor Soludo who spoke in a Television programme, said it would
have been suicidal to lock people down without enough resources to
feed them.
According to the former Governor of the Central Bank, malnutrition
arising from lack of what to eat would have weakened the immune system
of a great number of people, thereby making them easy prey to
coronavirus pandemic.
Professor Soludo, who made references to his recent article on the
current situation, noted that malaria and other diseases are currently
ravaging Nigeria and the rest of Africa, more than coronavirus.
He contended that locking people down from their means of livelihood
portends more danger than the current pandemic and cautioned against
communicating fear to the populace, but rather hope, especially when
the available data shows that most infected Africans survive the
disease eventually.
