Some stakeholders in Anambra State have urged community leaders to
encourage their members to participate actively in Governor Willie
Obiano’s Ugbo Azuno agricultural scheme.
Speaking in Awka the stakeholders said this will enable the State to
boost farming activities and achieve food sufficiency.
Paul Ezeoke reports that Governor Obiano introduced the Ugbo-Azuno scheme to mobilize Ndi Anambra to be actively involved in mass agricultural activities to achieve food security.
In his reaction, the National Chairman of the Willie Obiano support
group, Chief Jude Emecheta said agriculture offers viable option to
protect State and national economies from the devastative effect of
Covid-19.
Chef Emecheta noted that by planting crops, vegetables and other
economic crops in their homes the people are not only providing food
for themselves by also expanding their sources of revenue that would
enable them scale up their standards of living and increase the
State’s development indices and Gross Domestic Product.
He urged youths to explore opportunities in the agricultural value
chain including farming, piggery, fishing, snail and Bee farming among
other agricultural activities to become self reliant while urging
traditional rulers and town union executives to assist them access
credit facilities from financial institutions.
Also speaking a Medical practitioner, Dr Mike Omenugha said farming
would provide families with food and vegetables to maintain balanced
diet as they contain nutrients that help to fight diseases.
Dr Omenugha urged the people to rely more on local food to build their
immune system and reduce burden of health challenges, calling on
communities and privileged individuals to empower their youths to make
career in agriculture to become self reliant and productive to the
society.
He noted the present situation created by covid-19 offered opportunity
for Nigeria to diversify its economy and solve problem of unemployment
as well as raise per capita income in the country.
