Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Environment and State Project Co-ordinator, Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project to as a matter of urgency take urgent steps in controlling the gully erosion ravaging Ngene Okwuazu, INEC road-Umueri-in Anambra East Local Government Area.

The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Anambra West Constituency, Honourable Patrick Udeoba during yesterday’s plenary in Awka.

According to House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim Section twenty of the 1999 Constitution as amended stipulates that the protection of the environment is a fundamental objective of the State.

It is on this basis that Honourable Udeoba sponsored the motion.

Throwing more light on the motion, the sponsor explained that INEC road where Ngene Okwuazu is located connects Anambra West with the rest of Omambala region and the entire state at large.

He maintained that the road condition poses a serious threat to the life, property and the economy of his constituents if not rehabilitated.

On his part, the Deputy Speaker, Dr. Paschal Agbodike who regretted that erosion has adversely affected most communities in the State, called on Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Project to rise to the occasion by rehabilitating the road.

The Majority Leader, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor noted that good road network plays a key role in the development of any nation and urged the Executive Arm of Government to arrest the erosion menace now it has not escalated to save the state and the Federal Government huge sums of money that will be required to fix it when it worsens.

In their contributions, the Deputy Majority Leader, Honourable Emeka Aforka and the Member representing Oyi Constituency, Honourable Charles Obimma urged Governor Obiano to declare a State of emergency on pockets of erosion ravaging parts of the State to address the ugly development.
