The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okplala says, the state government will continue to strengthen the state Health Sector for the good of residents of the state.

Dr. Okplala made this assertion during a Press briefing to mark this year’s Safe Motherhood Day Celebration in Awka.

Dr. Okpala who stated that the event is being
celebrated on April eleventh every year, but was shifted because of COVID-19 pandemic, said that Safe motherhood is one of the important components of reproductive health, which ensures that all women receive the care they need, to be safe and healthy throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr. Okplala noted that safe motherhood initiative was launched by World Health Organization and other International Agencies in Nairobi, Kenya in 1987, and was launched in Nigeria in September 1990.

The Health Commissioner further affirmed that the celebration was aimed at overcoming maternal mortality from complications of pregnancy and childbirth in developing countries.

According to him, safe motherhood day initiative is helping to bring awareness about the importance of care during and after pregnancy as the World Health Organization has recommended four strategic interventions which should be delivered through Primary Health Centres on the foundation of equity for women, which includes Family Planning, Antenatal Care, Clean and Safe delivery among other things.
The Permanent Secretary, of the Ministry, Dr. John Ndibe, the Director of Public Health of the Ministry, Dr. Uchechukwu Onyejimbe among others spoke on various ways the state government is helping to ensure safe motherhood in the state.
