Anambra State Environmental Health Officers and Federal Ministry of
Environment have extended advocacy visits and decontamination
exercises to some offices and schools, as part of measures to contain
the spread of COVID-19 in Anambra State.


The exercises are coming on the heels of the Federal Ministry of
Environment’s donation of intervention materials to the Anambra State
Government to support its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to the ABS at the Nigeria Immigration Service office in Awka,
one of the public places visited, Mrs Chris-Benjamin Uche, Assistant
Director, Environmental Health Services in the Ministry, who
represented the Minister of Environment, Dr. Mahmud Abubakar, said the
exercises were aimed at complementing the Anambra State Government’s
containment measures against the pandemic.

Dr. Abubakar, who stressed the need for Government at different levels
to mobilize trained Environmental Health Officers to enable them carry
out periodic advocacy visits and decontamination of public places,
called on the people to maintain personal and best environmental
hygiene practices to strengthen the fight against the virus.
Receiving the team, the Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service,
Anambra State Command, Mrs Toochukwu Agwai, appreciated Environmental Health Officers for assisting the Anambra State Government in decontaminating public places, noting that the Obiano administration
had been so proactive in containing the spread of the virus in the
State.


Mr Anthony Odiegwu represented the Anambra State Ministry of
Environment during the exercises, while Messrs Celestine Onah, from
the Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja, and Moses Abadom, State
President of Environmental Health Officers, Anambra State Council,
were present during the exercises that equally took place at the State
Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and Queens’
Convent, Awka respectively.
