Various Communities across Anambra State have been urged to take
preventive measures to discourage youths from retrogressive practice
of selling lands.
Speaking to journalists in Awka, the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in
Anambra State Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene maintained that if such
practice is unchecked, it will have serious socio-economic
consequences in Igboland.
Paul Ezeoke reports that the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo who identified indiscriminate selling of lands as one of the causes of intra and inter-community crisis said Igbo culture encourages protection of land inheritance and transfer of the asset from one generation to another ad regretted that increasing level of land speculation and encroachment are putting land in communities under serious threat.
He advocated establishment of land management committee at Community,
village and kindred levels headed by traditional rulers, village and
kindred’s heads to protect people’s land from being sold by others
while calling for strict enforcement of land laws to stop the
excesses.
On the enforcement of boundary closure, Chief Okeke-Ogene urged
security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities and avoid
compromising their sense of duty urging Community leaders to sustain
efforts towards promoting COVID-19 Safety protocols.
Meanwhile, State governments across the Country have been enjoined to
prosecute people who violate the inter-State boundary closure to serve
as deterrent to others.
Speaking in Awka, a legal practitioner, Mr John Okoli-Akirika,
explained that while the constitution allows freedom of movement and
association for every Nigerian, there is also constitutional provision
that vested power in government to limit this right in the interest of
public peace, safety, order, morality or health.
Mr Okoli-Akirika made it clear that anybody who is attempting to sneak
into any State presently without being on essential duty is a serious
threat to public health and safety because of the COVID-19 pandemic
and should face the full weight of the law.
He called for synergy between the government and the people in the
fight against coronavirus as well as increase sensitization of the
people in promoting safety protocols.
