As the world marks the 2020 World Environment Day today, the Anambra State government has called on Ndi Anambra to key into this year’s theme “ One House, One tree Policy for Healthier Living “

The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Obi Nwankwo made the call during a Media briefing at the State Secretariat Awka.

Correspondent Chibuzo Obidike reports that the day was set aside by the United Nations General Assembly to focus on the global environment with a view to access the improvement or degrading of environment by the people.

Briefing Journalists, Mr. Nwankwo pointed out that environment is one of the best gifts of God as he said without the environment, no human can survive and regretted that the global environment has not received the best of care and attention, because of industrial pollution, urban decay as well as human negative activities which he said have degraded the global environment to a very poor state.

While making emphasis on the effects of deforestation and urbanization which have removed so many trees and flowers, the Environment Commissioner revealed that Governor Willie Obiano has and is still putting lots of efforts to return the environment of the state to a suitable standard for human habitation, giving birth to many leisure parks, cleaning and sweeping, active urban waste disposal among others.

Mr. Nwankwo who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Emmanuel Okafor, said that out of over nine hundred and fifty-nine erosion sites in the state, the state government is currently on erosion control works at hundred sites including those being carried out in partnership with World Bank and the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Programme, NEWMAP.

He appealed to the citizenry to see the protection of the environment as everyone’s business in order to have a clean and beautiful environment for all citizens.

The Commissioner directed all Landlords, developers, and Estate managers to plant at least one tree of choice within their facilities.
